Doxycycline 100 mg is a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline class.  It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, making it effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.  This versatile medicine is prescribed for respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia and syphilis, skin conditions including rosacea and acne, urinary tract infections, Lyme disease, and certain parasitic diseases such as malaria prophylaxis.  Its long half-life allows once or twice daily dosing, improving adherence.

Take Doxycycline 100mg exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.  Swallow tablets with plenty of water to prevent irritation of the oesophagus and remain upright for at least 30 minutes.  It is best taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals; however, if stomach upset occurs, you may take it with food (but avoid dairy products or calcium-rich foods that can impair absorption).  Do not take doxycycline with antacids, iron or magnesium supplements within two hours.  For many infections, a typical adult dose is 100 mg twice on the first day, followed by 100 mg once or twice daily.  For malaria prevention, travellers may take 100 mg daily starting one to two days before travel and continuing for four weeks after leaving the area.  Always complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms resolve early.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity).  Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors, and avoid tanning beds.  Some people may experience oesophagitis (painful swallowing) if the tablet becomes lodged in the throat.  Rare side effects include intracranial hypertension (severe headache, vision changes), liver dysfunction, changes in blood cell counts, or allergic reactions.  Seek medical attention if you develop persistent headache, blurred vision, rash, severe abdominal pain or signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes).  Doxycycline can harm unborn babies and should not be used during pregnancy or in children under eight years old due to the risk of tooth discolouration and inhibited bone growth.

Inform your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking, including blood thinners, isotretinoin, penicillin antibiotics and anticonvulsants, as interactions may occur.  Doxycycline may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; additional non-hormonal birth control is recommended during treatment.  People with kidney or liver impairment may require dose adjustments.  With appropriate use under medical supervision, doxycycline 100 mg is a powerful and versatile tool for combating a wide range of infections and for preventing malaria in high-risk areas.
