Apigat is a brand of apixaban, an oral anticoagulant belonging to a class of drugs known as direct Factor Xa inhibitors. It is prescribed to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. By selectively inhibiting Factor Xa in the blood coagulation cascade, apixaban reduces the formation of fibrin clots without requiring routine monitoring, offering patients a convenient alternative to older anticoagulants like warfarin.

To use Apigat, follow your healthcare provider’s dosing instructions carefully. The tablets are usually taken twice daily with or without food. Swallow them whole with water. Take doses at the same times each day to maintain consistent blood levels. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly unless instructed by your doctor, as stopping apixaban suddenly may increase your risk of developing clots. Inform your healthcare provider about any upcoming surgeries, dental procedures or invasive tests, as you may need to pause or adjust your anticoagulant therapy under medical supervision.

Common side effects of apixaban include easy bruising, minor bleeding from the nose or gums, or prolonged bleeding from cuts. More serious but less common adverse effects can involve major bleeding, such as blood in the stool or urine, coughing up blood, black tarry stools, severe headache or dizziness, or unusual weakness—seek immediate medical attention if these occur. Because apixaban affects blood clotting, it can interact with other medications and herbal supplements that increase bleeding risk, such as NSAIDs, antiplatelets, SSRIs, certain antibiotics and antifungals. Always provide your doctor with a full list of the medicines you take. Avoid activities that may increase your risk of injury, and use a soft toothbrush and electric razor to minimize bleeding. When used correctly under medical supervision, Apigat can significantly reduce the risk of serious thrombotic events and improve long-term health outcomes.
